Mocha Moms, Inc. statement on the removal of the Confederate Flag in SC

by Danae Jones Aicher, National Director of Communications, Mocha Moms, Inc.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that."

Those words, spoken by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, seem especially appropriate today as the Confederate flag came down in South Carolina; a direct result of people all over the country and, specifically in the South Carolina legislature, seeing the light of truth about that flag after the darkness of the massacre at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

While Mocha Moms, Inc. is pleased that the flag has come down, we are very aware that this is not the end of the fight for racial justice. In fact, it is the beginning of what we hope will be a transformation in how our country deals with race. We hope the conversations that began on that fateful night in a historic sanctuary will change the narrative of people of color and correct the myth of the dangerous black and brown boys that too often results in death for our sons and even our daughters. We hope this transformation makes it easier for us to finally close the academic achievement gaps, the health disparities, and the economic and environmental inequities too many in our communities face. This would be the real legacy of those nine people who died at the AME church that night. The realization of this dream can be the light that drives out the darkness of what the Confederate flag represents.
