Walking it Out for Diabetes Prevention

We invite you to come out to this free, one-day event which will feature dance contests, fitness sessions, lectures, demos and vendor booths all designed to improve the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of Black Women and their families.

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the African American community. The disease affects 15 percent of African American women compared to 6.9 percent of white women and more than 450,000 don’t know thy have it. African American women are also seven times more likely to have a limb amputated and develop kidney failure as a result of the disease. Even more compelling is the fact that 50 percent of Black girls will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

In response to these numbers, the Black Women’s Health Imperative, the African Methodist Episcopal Church Connectional Health Commission, and the Center for Black Women’s Wellness will host “Walking It Out” to Prevent Diabetes on Saturday, November 3, 2007, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Grant Park.  Please see the flyer below for more information.
