Reston Chapter launches BBOB Reading Nook September 13, 2008 - the Reston Chapter joined our national initiative to encourage reading among boys living in urban communities.
On September 13, the Reston Chapter teamed up with Lake Anne’s KG’s Cutz Barbershop and various corpo-rate sponsors in an effort to boost literacy and academic achievement among local African American male youth. The Boys Booked On Barbershops initiative kicked off with a festive ceremony to dedicate the barber-shop’s new reading corner.
Lake Anne Barber, Keith Greene, owner of KG’s Cutz, welcomed the idea of dedicating space in his shop to literacy. “The barber shop is more than just a place to get your hair cut,” he says. “It’s a place where men gather to talk about the events of the day, sports and relationships. By having a book corner in my shop, I hope it sends the message that we expect our boys to read and stay informed. I’m honored that the Reston Mocha Moms have chosen my shop for their campaign.”
The Reston chapter received book donations from Barnes and Noble, Reston Used Books and Sterling Library.
