Waldorf Chapter launches BBOB Reading Nook November 2, 2008 - the Waldorf Chapter joined our national initiative to encourage reading among boys living in urban communities.
The Waldorf Mocha Moms launched their Boys Booked on Barbershops initiative at Ron's Cut Masters in Waldorf, MD on Sunday, November 2, 2008.
Lifestyles of Maryland, a local community service organization, partnered with the chapter to invite 22 underprivileged boys to celebrate with them. Guests included Maryland 5th District Delegate Murray Levy, Charles County Commissioner Reuben Collins, Charles County school board member Charles Carrington, Corae Briscoe of Lifestyles of Maryland, and Principal James Short of Lackey High School who also shared a book with the children. Mocha Moms, Inc. leaders Cheli English-Figaro, LaShaun Phillips-Martin and Shalaun Newton also joined the celebration. African-American children's author Eric Kellum entertained approximately 25 children with a humorous routine based on his book series The Adventures of Diggle, Boogie and Lolo.
The reading nook was admired by all with its black bookcase filled with books donated by literacy partner Scholastic, black ottoman and inviting rug with steaming coffee mug motif. The Mochas and their guests enjoyed pizza and a delicious cake by Chef Arvell Jackson, husband of Mocha Sherryle Jackson. Each child went home with a book of their choice and a gift envelope stuffed with coupons donated by local businesses, including Red Robin, Chick Fil-A and Kool Kicks for Kids.
