UPPER MARLBORO, March 22, 2012 -- Our hearts are heavy this week as we watch the events surrounding the death of Trayvon Martin unfold. As mothers of color, we are devastated, for we know that Trayvon Martin could have been any of our sons...and the problem of profiling, racial or otherwise, by common citizens and law enforcement officials, is something that we live with each and every day. We know it is common practice in black households across this country to prepare our sons for what they will face and how they are to behave when confronted or detained. Yet no matter what we say, nothing can adequately prepare them, or us, for the harsh realities that exist.
Mocha Moms, Inc. joins everyday citizens, organizations and associations across this country in demanding a thorough and complete local and Federal investigation into the Trayvon Martin case, as well as a swift resolution. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Martin family as they grieve during this very difficult time. Though Trayvon Martin is gone, his death and the grave injustices against so many of our boys and men should serve as a stark wake up call to America. We all must unite to fight these injustices and support our own.
This week, our Orlando chapter has been active in the events surrounding the Trayvon Martin case, participating in vigils and offering support to the family. On Monday, March 26 at 4:00 pm, Mocha Moms Orlando will gather in support of Trayvon Martin's family in seeking justice for his wrongful death. The Rev. Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jesse Jackson said they will visit Sanford to demand answers from investigators, and Trayvon's mother is expected to attend. The location is the Sanford City Council Meeting, 300 N Park Ave in Sanford.
Also on Monday at 1pm, Chapter President Ann Johnson will be on WOKB 1680AM, an urban Mempowerment and inspiration gospel station, talking about the Trayvon Martin case. If you would like to get in touch with the Orlando Chapter, send messages or offer your support, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our Northern Prince George's County, MD Flagship Chapter, will also be involved in the Washington DC Rally for Trayvon on Saturday, March 24 at 2:00 pm. The location is Freedom Plaza, 14th and Pennsylvania Ave. NW. Please email email@example.com for details.
On a related note, our National President's dear friend Maria Roach is the person who launched the online petition that went viral urging the Feds to get involved in the case. She has gathered more than 600,000 signatures and reached out to celebs including Tichina Arnold and others. She was on the Jane Velez-Mitchell Show on CNN Headline News on Tuesday night talking about her petition which she is hand delivering to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and Attorney General Eric Holder in Washington this week. Hold your sons and your daughters close.
