American Promise

We're thrilled to announce a new Occupy School partnership with and opportunity to engage with the documentary film and campaign, American Promise.

The film, American Promise, is an award-winning and critically acclaimed documentary that follows the journeys of two African-American boys and their families from kindergarten through high school graduation.  It provides a powerful narrative about the lives of African-American boys and their families as well as an incisive look at the factors that contribute to the achievement gap in education for black males. You can watch the trailer here:

The campaign is specifically focused on empowering parents and families and we have partnered and contributed to their parent engagement initiative "The Promise Club." Which is dedicated to providing a parent community for ongoing and important dialogue on how we can better understand and support our sons academically, socially and emotionally. You can download the guide here and incorporate the Promise Club into your next Mocha Moms agenda.

The film is opening at the below cities starting October 18 and below we've also outlined how you can bring the film to any other city in the US and RAISE MONEY! Click the city below to see the theater details and ticket prices. The campaign is  working with groups in each city to "Adopt-A Screening" which is basically making one showtime a Mocha Moms group event, this is a great opportunity to use to launch your Occupy School Initiative or Promise Club. American Promise is working with a new platform called TUGG to bring the film to theaters nationwide. This means that organizations can host fundraiser screenings of the film at no cost, needing only to help pre-sell the required number of tickets in advance. Hosts select their preferred theater, date and showtime, and Tugg arranges the logistics with the theater. Time is set aside for a post-screening discussion and Q&A and depending on availability the filmmakers can even SKYPE in!  Click here for an overview of how TUGG works.

Hopefully, you will be able to integrate this opportunity in your Mocha Moms vision for this year and use this to help lift up Occupy Schools.
