Occupy Schools Past Events

Winston-Salem, NC
  Event Date: January-February 2014
In January and February, the Winston-Salem, NC chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. sponsored the Aycock Middle School Black History Quiz Bowl Team. Through the sponsorship, the chapter was able to give parents an outlet to be involved with helping their children study and work towards learning more of our history. The children were able to participate with other teams throughout Greensboro and learn how a quiz bowl works, how to study for a quiz bowl and how to work with a team. The parents coordinated study sessions, healthy snacks and even coordinated several parent meetings so that they could share information about their children's middle school experiences and how they navigate working with school administrators, peers, hormones, etc.

New Orleans, LA Mocha Moms Reading Corner
   Event Date: October 21, 2013
Mocha Moms is combining the Occupy Schools™ initiative with the Mocha Literacy initiative by dedicating a “Mocha Moms Reading Corner” in the school library of a local school that was damaged during Hurricane Katrina. The school underwent a massive renovation in 2011 and reopened at its original location in the fall of 2012 after spending a few years at other school sites in the area. When the school reopened last fall the students did not have access to a library on campus due to a lack of books and librarian. The newly hired school librarian said the school is in desperate need of books to fill their library for the students and is extremely excited about the upcoming dedication of the reading corner and book donation from the New Orleans Mocha Moms. We are seeking your help in getting books for the school. The school serves Pre K through 5th grade and there is a great need for books geared towards boys (sports, animals, celebrity biographies) and lower elementary students.
