Pasadena Mocha Moms Hosts “American Promise” Education Documentary Screening and Q & A

Mother’s Group Highlights Education Concerns with Award-Winning And Critically Acclaimed Documentary Now Showing Nationwide

LOS ANGELES, OCT. 22, 2013 --Mocha Moms, Inc. Pasadena Chapter will host a screening of "American Promise" Saturday, October 26, 2013, 7 PM at Laemmle's Playhouse 7, located at 673 E Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91101 (310) 478-3836. “American Promise” filmmakers Joe Brewster and Michele Stephenson will participate in Q & A’s after the screening (with their son Idris). The general public is welcome join in the conversation.
The film, “American Promise,” is a documentary that follows the journeys of two African-American boys and their families from kindergarten through high school graduation.  It provides a powerful narrative about the lives of African-American boys and their families as well as an incisive look at the factors that contribute to the achievement gap in education for black males. As a chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc.— Pasadena Mocha Moms joins other chapters across the nation in adopting screenings of that film in order to bring awareness of the need for increased parental engagement in communities of color. Mocha Moms, Inc. encourages parents of color to become more active and involved in the educational process. Studies show that regardless of the school or the school district, academic outcomes improve for children whose parents have positive and frequent communication with teachers, are actively involved in the PTA, attend school activities and field trips, regularly monitor homework assignments, and who are actively engaged in the school community.
