National Institute for Literacy

The National Institute for Literacy seeks to improve reading instruction and skills among children and adults. It believes in the power of literacy to transform lives, create opportunities, and change society. It knows that academic achievement is a key predictor of socioeconomic status and that strong reading, writing, and thinking skills are essential not only for success in school, at home, and in the workplace, but in life.  The National Institute for Literacy provides literacy resources, leadership and parent focused early childhood publications to support the Mocha Moms, Inc. National Community Service Initiative, “Closing the Gap on Minority Prosperity, Health and Achievement.”

Defining Literacy:

Literacy, it’s more than reading: “An individual’s ability to read, write, and speak English, compute, and solve problems, at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family of the individual, and in society. – (Source: Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Section 203)
